Jewish Mysticism to the Stage

Nationally-known storyteller Doug Lipman visits ____ to perform his newest piece, "The Soul of Hope: an epic tale of the Baal Shem Tov. The performance is on ____ at __ p.m. at ________.

Lipman, a professional storyteller, resides in Boston and travels much of the year performing. Lipman has become well-known as a musician, storyteller and storytelling coach, as well as author of numerous books and tapes on the subject.

The Soul of Hope is a two-act, spiritual epic, based on the mystical world of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Hasidic movement. Alone on stage, Lipman enriches the bare bones of this familiar Hasidic tale as he interprets thirty charcters, seven generations of action, flashbacks across centuries - and takes the audience into the intricate world of Jewish mystical symbolism.

The Boston Globe called The Soul of Hope "a spiritual adventure packed with humor, joy and pathos." The Kansas City Star described Lipman's performance by saying, "universal appeal...directly out of the storytelling traditon of Jewish life."

You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this good story performed by a storytelling master.

The Soul of Hope

an Epic Tale of the Baal Shem Tov

At ____ pm on ________, storytelling fans and theatre-goers alike will have the unique opportunity to hear The Soul of Hope, a two-act Jewish spiritual epic at ________. Written and performed by Doug Lipman, this story traces the mystical appearance of a particular form of hope over seven generations. Admission is $___. Many have heard how the Baal Shem Tov went to a place in a forest, said a prayer, built a fire, and the world was uplifted. Through each generation, a piece of the mythic ritual was lost until only the story remained. But the story was enough. The version Doug tells enriches these bare bones with a moving and delightful story of how the Baal Shem Tov assembled his secret mystical knowledge and how that knowledge was lost. The audience comes away refreshed and awed by the simple gift of hope. The show happens on earth and in heaven; it has dozens of characters; its action involves seven generations, with flashbacks across millennia. Speaking of his attraction to this piece, Doug says, "I have a hunger for the bigness of this story. And I think we all share a hunger for this kind of bigness. We want to hear big stories, to know big stories, to live big stories."

The Soul of Hope is a story that allows us to touch the empty places, to grieve and then fill up with hope and the possibility of joy. It is a story to return to again and again.

Many listeners have chosen to come back to see this story several times, saying that each time they hear more and more. One person said, "The first time I saw this show, I thought it was about the Baal Shem Tov. The second time I saw it, I thought it was about Doug. The third time I saw it, I thought it was about me."
